Lay off Sanderos and Gilberto
Gooners
Coming into a match after a long lay off or lack of continuous playing time is bad enough. Coming back against Sevilla away makes it even worse. I admit I was gasping in disbelief in some elementary defending. But Sevilla at home are no pushovers and any mistakes are bound to be magnified several times.
The fact that the whole team, bar Toure and Bendtner, were playing well below par, that criticisms were mainly targeted at these two players and not at the other players’ beggar’s belief. Have we not learnt from last season? The way some Gooners continuously criticise Gallas but suddenly this season showering him with acclaim as the captain we were looking for (not forgetting the disbelief early in the season when he was made captain at Gilberto’s expense and Wenger must be mad by appointing Gallas).
Sevilla was a learning curve, nothing more, nothing less. The fact that we lost the winning momentum is not as great as some sceptical Gooners and media would want us to believe. Players needed rest and the last two CL and up coming Carling Cup matches provide the regulars with much needed respite from the gruelling December schedule.
So what if we fielded the first team and drew at Sevilla? Would that make any difference? No, it wouldn’t. Players like Traore and Denilson gain more from the experience of losing and playing at such an intimidating atmosphere in Sevilla. I was surprised Wenger didn’t field more reserves. I hope he does in the last CL match. It has been a long time coming that we can do this and blood the younger players. Playing in CL is a step up from Carling Cup.
As for Sanderos and Gilberto, their performances were woeful but what do you expect from them? They have not played regularly and the opposition were not Derby, all due respect to Derby of course. I remember Edu. He needed a good three to four games to get into stride. Sanderos and Gilberto are no different. There are only a handful who can actually come back into the squad like they have not been away. But the way Arsenal play, familiarity is an important aspect set up. Even Hleb needed two continuous season before he realise his full potential.
I would rather we lose now and exorcise the unbeaten ghost in a meaningless match than in the Premiership or later stages of the CL at the same time giving play time to players who need them.

i hear what you're saying mate, and i totally agree player bashing is totally wrong and it drives me mad when so called fans lay in to players like helb one week, then all of a sudden love him the next week.
however, i don't belive lack of playing time was an excuse for gilberto. senderos you can forgive as he'd just come back from injury, but gilberto i really did expect more. bear in mind he's been fit and training regularly and he's also just completed 180 minutes for the brazil national team so i'd hardly call him rusty! it was just a bad performance and hopefully just a one off.
The team was not below tar prior to giving away the equalizing goal.
It was after that event that Sevilla sensed blood, went for the kill, and skinned us alive, big time.
As has been pointed out, Gilberto had already completed 2 games within the previous 14 days for Brazil, so he can't use being rusty as an excuse. He was simply very poor - that ball he gave to Fabiano within minutes of us conceding the first goal was truly shocking!
Senderos - the jury has been out on him for sometime, trying to be kind, but I'm beginning to believe now that he's simply not good enough to play for a team that has serious ambitions of winning silverware.
I didn't have a problem with Arsene gambling over the team selection...I did have a problem with him not making any tactical changes to stop Traore from getting roasted, as Eduardo was unable to help stop the rampaging runs & crosses from Avles & Navas.
I just hope that Traore's confidence hasn't been damaged too badly.
I think people can say when someone played bad. Some of the mistakes Gilberto made, you would not expect from an U18 defender not a world cup winner and National captain.
I am sure we can bounce back tomorrow but we need to keep on track in the prem, if we can win 2 of our next 3 games we will be doing well as they are all away.
Ive been after taking Gilberto out of the team for ages. He slows the game down and cannot pass the ball for shite.
I feel Flamini, Diarra, denilson or Diaby would be a much better choice and we have too many in the first place.
4.5 million? Ill bite your hand off.

I understand about Gilberto but playing for Brazil and coming back to club football are totally different levels.
I admit his misplaced pass was shocking but we are used to that by now. I myself say a silent prayer when he has the ball in the hope he just plays it short to another Arsenal player.
Sanderos may not be Gallas or Toure, but then again, which other Premiership defender is better and at the right price? Further, the defensive midfielders were not making it any easier on the defenders.
As for Traore, I believe he will come back stronger knowing he was out-manned rather than outplayed.

Hey Guys, whats with all this negativity. Let's be really honest here, If Arsenal had beaten Sevilla in their back yard with that line up, it would have been truly amazing. Arsene has an eye on both competitions, the results over the next few weeks could prove that Arsene may have taken the right decision. As for the debate about Senderos, he will always be prone to the odd mistake, which as we all know will cost us!
Althoug I agree with gunner6, I find it really difficult to take anyone seriously when they, not once, not twice, but four times spell the name of one of our players wrong.
It's Senderos, not Sanderos. And you really, really should know that.
Hello I just entered before I have to leave to the airport, it's been very nice to meet you, if you want here is the site I told you about where I type some stuff and make good money (I work from home): here it is
I don't believe in player bashing either, but let criticism be given where it is due, as everyone has a right to an opinion.
Gilberto has being poor virtually all season, however you could put that down to a bad spell.
Senderos has been poor throughout his Arsenal career, he lacks mental strength seems to be unable to play under pressure. He is a liability and he should be sold, he has had long enough to prove himself.
